Preserve Before You Block
When facing online harassment, the instinct is to immediately delete the messages and block the perpetrator. While protecting your mental health is paramount, destroying the evidence makes it impossible to escalate the issue to platforms, schools, or law enforcement later.
The Evidence Capture Protocol
- Screen Record: Don't just take pictures. Start a screen recording on your phone, scroll through the messages or the fake profile, and click on the user's handle to show their specific account URL and bio.
- Capture the URLs: A screenshot of a username can be faked. Always copy the raw URL (e.g., instagram.com/username) and paste it into a master text document.
- Include Timestamps: Ensure your phone or computer clock is visible in the screenshots or recordings.
- Don't Engage: Replying or arguing back complicates the narrative. Document the abuse, then step away.
- Secure Storage: Do not just leave the screenshots in your camera roll. Move them to a secure cloud folder (like Google Drive or OneDrive) and share access only with trusted allies or investigators.
Once you have securely backed up digital copies of the harassment, you are safe to proceed with blocking and reporting.
